Anyone participating in the World Table Tennis (WTT) Europe Smash 2025 knew that winning the women’s singles tournament would require taking down China’s Sun Yingsha, the woman who has sat atop the women’s singles rankings for over 162 consecutive weeks.
And on Sunday, Sun finished showing her opponents why none of them have been able to unseat her in over three years.
Sun defeated China’s Wang Manyu (Women’s Singles No. 2) in six games to win the WTT Europe Smash 2025 women’s singles tournament. This victory gives Sun the fourth WTT Grand Smash women's singles title of her career, making her the first women's singles player ever to win that many.
Sun narrowly escaped her first two games against Wang, winning each by just two points. That 2-0 lead wouldn’t be too comfortable for Sun, who fell to Wang after a brutal 5-11 third game. Another loss, this one by a razor-thin 10-12 score, would tie the match at two games apiece.
Sun took control of the fifth game, where she led Wang by as many as seven points before winning 11-6. All she needed was one more win to clinch her title, which she immediately earned afterward with an 11-5 victory. At no point in either game did Sun trail Wang.
This match marked the 11th time Sun and Wang have faced one another for a finals match at the international level, and Sun’s victory on Sunday was her seventh in those games. Sun now boasts an 84% (16/19) win rate in WTT singles finals matches, as well as an 80% (40/50) win rate against her fellow Chinese players.
This fierce battle between the two talented women came not long after a victory they could celebrate together. Sun and Wang (Women’s Doubles No. 3) teamed up for this event’s women’s doubles tournament, and they defeated Japanese tandem Miwa Harimoto and Satsuki Odo (Women’s Doubles No. 4) to win their third WTT Grand Smash title as a duo, which is their first in two years and their first outside of Singapore.
Both Sun and Wang will participate in the WTT Champions Macao 2025, which will run from Sept. 9 to Sept. 14. Time will tell if Sun will keep her winning streak alive, or if someone can manage to topple the best women’s singles player in the world this time.
